The champ! The best of the best! Michael Phillips campeón mundial de baristas 2010, tuvo la gentileza de responder una pequeña entrevista. Se nos viene el WBC de Bogotá (2-5 de junio)!!
1.- A casi un año de ser el campeón ¿te sientes realmente como un embajador del café?
Siento que la mejor parte de haber ganado fue la oportunidad de representar al café especial alrededor del mundo. La cantidad de lugares y oportunidades que tuve para apoyar las causas, que como comunidad encontramos más importantes, fueron numerosas y satisfactorias.
I feel like the opportunity to represent specialty coffee around the world was the best part of winning. The number of places and opportunities I had to champion the causes we as a community find most important were many and fulfilling.
2.- ¿Vas a estar trabajando en este WBC?
Sí. Yo y los otros dos caballeros con quienes estoy trabajando como fundadores de la nueva compañía de tostado, Handsome Coffee Roasters, Tyler Well y Chris Owens, estamos como voluntarios este año en el WBC. Todos estamos trabajando en las barras de bebida y de espresso, ¡así que puedes darte una vuelta y te preparamos un trago!
I am. Myself and the two other gentleman I am working with as founders of the new roasting company Handsome Coffee Roasters, Tyler Wells and Chris Owens, are all volunteering at the WBC this year. We are all working on the brew bars and espresso bars so swing by and let us make you a drink!
3.- ¿Qué te parece que el WBC se realice en un país productor?
Me parece fantástico. Le ha tomado demasiado tiempo a la competencia empezar a alcanzar diferentes partes del mundo. Creo que todos están muy emocionados por eso este año.
I think it is fantastic. It has taken far to long for the competition to start reaching out to different parts of the globe. I think everyone is really excited for that this year.
4.- ¿Cuál crees que podría ser el impacto para Colombia y América Latina?
Creo que el impacto será el reconocimiento de que la cultura del barista ya no es más una idea solamente ligada a los Estados Unidos, Europa o Asia. En toda América se está comenzando a jugar un rol mucho más grande, al igual que en África.
I think the impact will be the recognition that barista culture is no longer just an idea tied to the US, Europe and Asia. All of the Americas are starting to play a much bigger role along with Africa as well.
5.- Do you have a favorite? / ¿Tienes un favorito?
Mi café favorito es el cultivado, tostado y preparado de la mejor manera. El mejor café proviene del cuidado y de la atención.
My favorite coffee is the one grown, roasted and prepared the best. Great coffee comes from care and attention.
(Mi teoría es que en esta pregunta obviamente se entiende que le pido que nombre algún barista que él tenga como favorito, pero como estamos frente a todo un caballero, con estilo y sutil ironía se abstiene de contestar leseras)
